A cookie is a small file, consisting of letters and numbers, stored on the device from which a website is accessed, following the request issued to the browser (e.g. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, etc.) by the web server that host the website; the file in question is completely passive: it does not contain software, viruses, spyware and cannot access information stored on the device in question.
The cookie has two components: the name and the content (value).
The duration of existence of a cookie is strictly determined, and access to the cookie is allowed only to the web server that generated it, when a user returns to the website associated with that web server.
A cookie does not request personal information and, in most cases, does not personally identify Internet users.

Security aspects related to cookies
A cookie is a completely passive “plain text” file and contains no code segments. As such, it cannot be executed as a program, it cannot self-launch, it cannot replicate itself on other devices or networks, so it cannot – under any circumstances – be considered a virus.
However, because they store information about users’ preferences and browsing history, cookies can be considered a Spyware vulnerability. Most anti-spyware software flags the presence of cookies and marks them for deletion as part of specific anti-virus/anti-spyware procedures.
Modern browsers offer the possibility of managing privacy settings, allowing the setting of cookie acceptance levels, their validity period or their automatic deletion after visiting a certain site.
Identity protection is a very important right of every internet user and involves knowing the possible problems that may arise through the improper use of cookies.
Because they are used in the bi-directional communication between the browser and the website, an attacker can speculate on the use of an unencrypted connection – for example an unsecured WiFi network – to intervene in the course of data transmission and intercept the information contained in the cookie. Although this rarely happens, the risk involved should not be overlooked.
Another risk of attack is represented by the wrong settings of cookies by the origin servers. If a website does not force the browser to use encrypted channels exclusively, an attacker can use this vulnerability to obtain information that can later be used for unauthorized access.
It is very important that you know the risks and weigh all the potential implications when deciding on the most appropriate method of protecting your personal information.
Changes to Cookie Policy
Given that the legislation on the protection of personal data, the interpretations and recommendations of state bodies and supervisory authorities will undergo changes, we reserve the right to change the content of this document at any time, for any reason and without notice.
We will inform you of any changes to our cookie policy by displaying them on this page. This document supersedes all previous communications or statements regarding our cookie practices and the terms and conditions of use of this website.
Tips for safe and responsible browsing based on cookies
Most websites (if not all) use cookies because of their indisputable utility, so nowadays they are almost unavoidable. A clear understanding of how they work and the benefits they bring allows you to take the necessary security measures so that you can surf the Internet with confidence. Disabling cookies prevents you from enjoying the use of the most popular sites (Youtube, Gmail, Yahoo, etc.).
Here are some tips that may be useful for you to browse safely with the help of cookies:
- take the time to set up your browser, setting a comfortable level of cookie security;
- if you agree to the use of cookies and you are the only person using the device, you can set long expiration periods for storing browsing history and personal access data;
- if you use the device in common with other people, you can set the automatic deletion of individual browsing data at the end of the session (when you close the browser);
- install the latest versions of your operating system, browser and security applications (antivirus/antispyware) and update them periodically. Many of the cookie-based attacks are carried out by exploiting vulnerabilities in an old version of the browser;
- use spyware detection and prevention applications that provide web attack detection, preventing your browser from accessing sites that might exploit vulnerabilities or download dangerous software.
